The skilled labour procedure

Even today, some sectors face major difficulties in filling job vacancies. Due to demographic change, meeting the demand for skilled workers is one of the greatest challenges of the coming decades. In addition to intra-European Union (EU) migration, attracting qualified professionals from outside the EU will be key to addressing Germany’s labor shortages.

On March 1st, 2020, the German government expanded the framework of the Skilled Workers Immigration Act, allowing qualified workers from non-EU countries to immigrate to Germany under certain conditions.

The accelerated skilled worker procedure allows employers to bring in skilled workers faster by shortening the immigration process, as there are legally defined deadlines that apply. The procedure is based on § 81a of the Residence Act.
